I have taught History (including A Level) at Secondary schools for over 40 years. For many years, I was Head of History at Mount St Mary’s College, Nr Sheffield, and I finished my teaching career as a Lecturer in History at King Edward VI College, Stourbridge.
I have developed a wide range of historical specialisms and interests during that time. Favourite periods range from the Ancient World to the Modern Day; favourite regions include Britain, USA, Russia, and most of Europe; favourite themes include political, diplomatic and constitutional history, as well as cultural and religious history, and economic and social history. This wide range is reflected in the scope of the titles of the talks I have prepared.
Since retirement, I have developed and continue to develop illustrated talks aimed at groups of interested adults. These usually last about one hour, but they can be shortened or lengthened according to circumstances. All are accompanied by visual illustrations and some may be accompanied by video or audio excerpts.
If a group wishes to have a talk on any topic not in the list below, this can be arranged, but it will have to be negotiated. Recently, I have given talks to various branches of the University of the Third Age (U3A) and to local Historical Societies in the Midlands. Talks last about 60 mins; all can be trimmed to suit circumstances. They are normally illustrated by Power Point slides. The technology for showing these slides (projector, laptop, screen) is not usually provided.
