Neville Chamberlain – A Reappraisal
Originally entitled ‘Neville Chamberlain was right’, this talk explores the arguments for and against appeasement in the later 1930s, but it goes further: in his earlier career Chamberlain was the man who did much to promote the Welfare State, for instance getting rid of workhouses for the treatment of the poor, he did much to pull Britain out of the Depression and he managed a rearmament programme that was far more intelligent than anything Churchill suggested.
